Roger Mühl

Roger Mühl was born in Alsace in December 1929. After studying at the École supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Strasburg, he designed theatre sets for Germain Muller’s troupe. A few years later, he settled in Provence where the landscapes provided him with a inextinguishable source of creativity. Often based on the impasto technique, his paintings of gardens and landscapes in Provence, Brittany or Alsace brought him worldwide fame. His mastery of light and colours lends gentleness to his canvasses. The same is true of the tapestry cartoons that he created for PINTON alongside Henri Bacaud, the workshop manager at the time.

The simplicity, the harmony and the powerful formality of his paintings found a perfect outlet with the short weave technique. As well as tapestry, Roger Mühl created lithographs, stained glass pieces and murals. He died in Mougins, his adopted city, in April 2008.
