Description
cotton
Cotton is made from the vegetal fibres surrounding the seeds of the cotton plant. Traces of cotton were found in Ancient Egypt and in Mexico, possibly over 7,000 years old. Cotton culture developed in America, Africa and Eurasia. While it reached Europe as early as the IInd century BC, its history on that continent truly began with the creation of the West India trading companies. From then on, the culture of cotton never stopped growing and it is now the most used natural fibre in the world. More difficult to weave than linen because of its short fibres, it has a higher density. Cotton is a very good insulation material thanks, in particular, to its exceptional moisture absorption properties. It is warm, soft, comfortable. PINTON weaves this staple of the textile industry on its own or combined with other materials for the Couture as well as the Diffusion lines. In tapestry making, cotton is very rarely used on its own and is most often combined with other materials. It is generally the material used for the warp thread.
Cotton can be used in loop weave where the continuous thread forms loops on the surface of the rug, or in pile weave where the threads on the surface of the rug are cut. It can also be woven as loop and cut which combines both techniques.
the jacquard
The Jacquard loom was developed by Joseph Marie Jacquard in the early 19th century. PINTON Jacquard’s sophisticated technique can weave up to 105 threads per cm2, allowing for a large span of textures, designs and colours. Indeed, despite the number of colours on each loom being limited to 7 or 8, the crossing of the threads offers an extensive range of colours and hues, hence more than 500 possible colours per loom. In addition, this particular technique makes Jacquard fabric extremely resistant to deformation by stretching and to tearing.
Adaptable to various supports, Jacquard fabric can be plain with placed patterns or in « all-over », in other words a continuous and regular repetition of patterns over the entire surface. The PINTON Jacquard is manufactured in 6 stages, from the warping to the finishing touches, including the design of the cartoon which, nowadays, with the assistance of computer software, allows for a very fine weave.
Pierre Gonalons
Pierre Gonalons was born in Lyon and he became interested in Art History and the wealth of French heritage at a very young age. After graduating from the École Camondo in Paris, he opened his own studio at the age of 23. Through his creations for prestigious brands as well as for his own collections, he imposed his unique style and idea of space. Interior architect, designer, creative director and scenographer, he is fascinated by craftsmanship and traditional materials. Pierre Gonalons offers a minimalist approach to design imbued with references to pop culture and decorative arts.
In this collaboration with PINTON, Pierre Gonalons here again placed history at the heart of his work. First of all, his own story, which marks his creative work, then the story of each person, which influences our way of looking at a work, and finally, the history of arts, inherent to the choice of simple circles and squares, the former symbolising life, the latter, perfection. These shapes, side by side, and that even sometimes merge, evoke the idea of an encounter: the encounter between the artist and his work, between the work and those who contemplate it, between Pierre Gonalons and the Atelier PINTON!
